What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a comprehensive, holistic way of looking at health and disease. It’s a personalized approach to medicine that asks why illness occurred in that individual, taking into account their genetics, microbiome, lifestyle, nutrition, and environment. It seeks to identify the root causes of dysfunction and chronic disease, which often stems from our standard American diets, high stress lifestyles, toxic environment, and unhealthy habit-based choices.

What is functional gynecology?

Using this functional medicine approach to diagnose and treat women’s health conditions, such as endometriosis, heavy periods, PCOS, infertility, and menopausal symptoms, is the foundation for practicing functional gynecology. Indeed, the food you eat or don’t eat, the way your manage your daily stress, the way you move or don’t move your body, what you put on your skin, what medicine you take, and what relationships you nourish, affects your hormones, your natural female cycle, your gut health, your mood, and whether or not you develop many of the gynecological conditions I mentioned.

If you already suffer from a gynecological condition, functional gynecology integrates major diet and lifestyle changes to heal the root cause of the issue and not just put a band-aid on the symptoms with a pill or procedure.

This type of medicine is most successful when there is an active, ongoing partnership between the patient and the physician. Ridding the body of disease and getting to a point of health and vitality is an ongoing journey, and a functional gynecologist is perfectly equipped to guide you along the way.

In the book, Catherine Jansen becomes a teenage mother and high school drop-out. Instead of stagnating, she decides to rise above her situation and fight to find her purpose in life—to become a physician to help others heal. Eventually, Catherine overcomes her obstacles to become a successful doctor and help other women rise above similar situations.

This book is a compelling fiction based on my own personal journey from teen mom to physician.

“I hope my book helps other women find their inner strength and make them feel empowered enough to pursue their dreams. I want them to realize they have options and the choices they make will determine the path they end up on.”

Testimonials

I came to see Dr. Barber because I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, and having pain every time I ate. She asked me to give her 3 weeks, to make me feel better without prescription medication. It’s been almost 10 weeks and not only am I feeling 100% better, but I’ve lost 25 pounds and am learning how to cook heathy and delicious meals. I’m so thankful for her encouragement and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle.

My 16 yr old daughter two autoimmune diseases- type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. She has struggled with her blood sugars and cholesterol levels for years. In addition to being on insulin, she was on the verge of being put on a statin medication. I knew we had to make changes, so I turned to Dr. Barber for advice on healthy eating. That was the best decision of my life! Within 2 months, my daughter dropped her cholesterol level from 187 to 116, Read more...Show less

It has been a learning journey. A year ago, I felt like something wasn’t right. I went to my PCP with a laundry list of symptoms and none of them pointed to anything. They asked me what I wanted to do. I left feeling very defeated. Two months later, I was diagnosed with a very overwhelming diagnosis- breast cancer. Health care at that point was very disjointed and extremely specific. With over 8 different specialists, I found it hard to Read more...Show less

After being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 6 years ago, I struggled to find a medicine that my body accepted. I’ve tried over 5 different medications and nothing seemed to stick. Either my body would adjust and the medicine wouldn’t work anymore, or I’d experience bad side effects, or I was allergic. Finally, (when I was facing surgery to have part of my colon removed) I broke down and said I was done. I felt that God was leading me in a Read more...Show less
